Slovenia lies in the Alpe-Adria part of Europe. So clearly it’s no surprise wherever you start your cycling day, there’s a strong chance you’ll sooner or later find yourself with no other option than to go uphill. Something which makes every cycling tour more of a challenging and fulfilling experience. With the Mountain passes of Slovenia tour we want to take you one step further, offering a demanding 4-day cycling encounter with an impressive 6210 m of cumulative elevation gain. Along the way you’ll cross five mountain passes, climb one mountain saddle to almost 2000 m above sea level and hop through three countries within one single day – Slovenia, Italy and Austria. At the end of each day of riding we wrap things up with a rewarding delicious dinner. If you’re willing to put in some extra effort for an unforgettable experience – this is the right choice for you.

Itinerary

DAY 01

KAmNIK TO KRANJSKA GORA

DistanceDistance: 88,2 km
DistanceElevation: 1260 m

Anyone who climbs more than 6000 m over 4 days has to take things seriously from the very beginning. On day 1 you’ll climb almost 1300 m of cumulative elevation gain stretching almost 90 km. The route takes you into the charming ski resort of Kranjska Gora, a handy gateway to tackle the first mountain pass.

DAY 02

PREDIL AND MANGART SADDLE

DistanceDistance: 69,2 km
DistanceElevation: 1570 m

From Kranjska Gora you head towards Italy using a strengthened tarmac path dedicated purely for cyclists. 10 km down the road – you’ll find yourself in Italy. Just before reaching the Italian city of Trevisio, you’ll be back on a regular road on your way passing Predil. This first pass out of 5 (in four days) will bring you back to Slovenia then onwards towards Mangart saddle before heading down to Bovec to complete your day.

DAY 03

VRŠIČ

DistanceDistance: 45,8 km
DistanceElevation: 1090 m

After two days of regular cycling, it’s time for something a little more relaxing on day 3. For the first half of the day take your pick between an activity at Bovec and Soča valleys – rafting, paragliding… but remember to save some energy as you’ll need to climb the Vršič pass later in the day to get back to Kranjska Gora. Crossing Vršič is truly a unique experience. Interestingly, the road was originally built by Russian war prisoners during the First World War.

DAY 04

KORENSKO SADDLE AND LJUBELJ PASS

DistanceDistance: 131,2 km
DistanceElevation: 2290 m

The forth and final day consists of riding back to where it all began – and perhaps the hardest day of them all. If you still have the power and drive, we’ll take a regular route that includes 2 passes and 2 border crossings (Slovenia-Austria-Slovenia). For those who fancy something a little lighter, we can opt for an alternative to make it easier.

Logistics

Our adventure starts and ends in Kamnik near Ljubljana.

AIRPORT SHUTTLE

Ljubljana is surrounded with 4 international airports in maximum two and a half hour distance (Ljubljana, Venice, Trieste, Klagenfurt). We can arrange airport shuttles from all 4 airports.

BY CAR

From Austria to Kamnik you either take Loibl (Ljubelj) pass or Karavanke tunnel and head for Ljubljana. In Kranj take the exit and then follow the signs for Kamnik. It is about 1,5h drive, altogether.

From Italy to Kamnik head toward Trieste, cross the border to Slovenia and continue toward Ljubljana and then further to Kranj. Take the exit and follow the signs for Kamnik. It shouldn’t take you more than 2,5h from Venice airport.

From Ljubljana airport head toward Ljubljana and in Mengeš turn toward Kamnik. Less than 30 min drive.
